RICHMOND, Ky. – The Eastern Kentucky University football team concluded its spring season Sunday afternoon at Roy Kidd Stadium with the annual spring game. The Maroon team held the White team off the scoreboard in the rainy conditions, 5-0.

The only scoring came from a 33-yard #Logan O’Connor field goal in the second quarter and a safety right before the end of the game. Sophomore Robert Knowles tackled redshirt freshman Matt Lengel# in the end zone on a screen pass.

Head coach Dean Hood split the team in half so that both the Maroon and White teams would have an offense and defense. The game was scored the same as a regular season football game except that kick and punt returns for scores did not count in the official scoring.

Junior Jeremy Caldwell did return a punt to the end zone in the second quarter as the defensive back raced down the far sideline virtually untouched for a 52-yard unofficial score. Sophomore Justin Bell almost found pay dirt on another punt return in the third quarter. Bell broke through the first wave of defenders and scampered 59 yards before being forced out at the 12-yard line.

Offensively, junior running back #H.B. Banjoman# stood out with 65 rushing yards on just eight carries. On the other side of the ball, junior linebacker Tyson Patrick led all players with eight tackles. Redshirt freshman linebacker Ichiro Chiba chipped in with 2.5 tackles for loss.

EKU’s first game of the 2010 fall season is set for Thursday night, Sept. 2 at Missouri State. The Colonels will be aiming for their third OVC title in the last four years.
