Denham Named OVC Football Offensive Player of the Week

Junior RB Matt Denham
BRENTWOOD, Tenn. – Running back Matt Denham came away with adidas OVC Offensive Player of the Week honors following Eastern Kentucky University’s 33-22 win over Tennessee State Saturday afternoon.

Denham, a native of Rineyville, Ky., carried the ball 35 times for 226 yards in EKU’s 2011 Homecoming victory. Both of those numbers are career highs. Denham scored two touchdowns including a 29-yard scoring run with 4:53 to play in the game which gave EKU a two-score lead. He averaged 6.5 yards per carry versus TSU and reached the 200-yard plateau for the second time in the past three weeks.

The junior leads the OVC in multi-rushing touchdown games in 2011 (three). He is one of only three running backs at the FCS level to have multiple 200-yard games this season. The 226 rushing yards is the fifth-highest single-game total in the FCS this season. Over the past three weeks (all Colonel victories), Denham has 584 rushing yards and six touchdowns.

The other weekly award winners were UT Martin’s Montori Hughes (Defensive), Jacksonville State’s Gabriel Chambers (Specialist) and Southeast Missouri’s Tim Hamm-Bey (Newcomer).

EKU (4-3, 3-1 OVC) continues conference play this Saturday, Oct. 29 at Murray State. Game time is set for 2 p.m. ET.
