RICHMOND, Ky. – The Eastern Kentucky University football team finished its 2012 preseason camp Saturday morning with another highlight-filled scrimmage. With the Colonels set to begin fall classes on Monday, practices will now move to the afternoon and evening.
Junior kicker
Luke Pray drilled a pair of field goals in the first quarter, including a 49-yard attempt which probably had at least five yards to spare. One other special teams highlight came early in the scrimmage when junior
Deshaun Sands nearly returned a kick-off for a touchdown.
Squeezed between those field goals was an interception by redshirt freshman linebacker
Chris Kelly, who capitalized off a tipped pass thanks to junior defensive lineman
Anthony Shoemaker.
In the second quarter, sophomore safety
Brandon Stanley put some points on the board for the defense. He hauled in a deflected pass and returned the interception approximately 60 yards for a touchdown. Later in the quarter, freshman quarterback
Kyle Romano found fellow freshman
Jeff Glover for an 18-yard touchdown in the back corner of the end zone.
Senior wide receiver
Cameron Bailey was not to be outdone as he pulled off a one-handed catch for 35 yards along the far sideline before halftime
Following a five-minute halftime break, sophomore quarterback
Jared McClain directed two touchdown drives with the first team offense in the third quarter. Bailey finished off the first drive with a 35-yard scoring reception down the left sideline. The second scoring drive featured a good mixture of running and passing. McClain capped that drive with an impressive 32-yard strike down the middle of the field to junior tight end Matt Lengel.
The defense made its fair share of plays in the second half as well including a key stop on a 3rd-and-1 play late in the scrimmage.
Several key players were held out of the scrimmage due to some minor injuries such as senior quarterback #T.J. Pryor#, senior wide receiver
Tyrone Goard and junior defensive lineman
David Carter.
