Labeja Named Co-OVC Women's Tennis Player of the Week

BRENTWOOD, Tenn. – Sophomore Kristina Labeja was named the adidas co-OVC Women’s Tennis Player of the Week as announced by the league office today. Labeja is the first Colonel to earn the weekly award this spring.

Labeja, hailing from Riga, Latvia, is undefeated in OVC singles action at the No. 2 spot (7-0) and OVC doubles at the No. 1 position (5-0) this year. She won all three of her singles matches last week in straight sets. In doubles, Labeja has teamed up with fellow sophomore Melissa Gerritsen to win six straight matches at No. 1 doubles as well as eight of nine overall.

The EKU women’s tennis team (15-6, 8-0 OVC) has won 20 straight conference matches dating back to 2011.

Labeja is sharing this week’s honors with Murray State junior Carla Suga. Tennessee Tech senior Syrym Abdukhalikov got the nod for OVC Men’s Tennis Player of the Week.

The Colonels will wrap up the OVC regular season title and No. 1 seed in the upcoming conference tournament with a win over Eastern Illinois (April 13) or SIUE (April 14) this weekend.
