BRENTWOOD, Tenn. – Junior guard
Justin Stommes was named Ohio Valley Conference Men’s Basketball Player of the Week today as announced by the league office.
Stommes, a native of Cold Spring, Minn., was named the MVP of the O’Reilly Auto Parts CBE Classic (Richmond sub-regional) after leading Eastern Kentucky to a 3-0 record in the event. In four total games last week (all EKU wins), the junior averaged 14.5 points, 4.5 rebounds and 4.2 assists per game while shooting 48.8 percent (21-of-43) from the field and 90.9 percent (10-of-11) from the free throw line.
Stommes hit the game-winning three-pointer with 9.7 seconds left to lift EKU to a 74-72 victory over UTSA on Nov. 25. In that contest, the 6-7 guard scored 17 points and dished out a career-high seven assists in 37 minutes of action. He added 21 points, six rebounds, three assists and three steals in a 10-point victory over UC Irvine as well as 15 points, five rebounds and six assists in a win over FIU.
The other award winners from this past week were Tennessee State junior forward Josh Sain (Newcomer) and Murray State guard Isaiah Canaan (Freshman).
Eastern Kentucky (5-1) tips off OVC action this Thursday, Dec. 3 at Murray State. The game will be televised on ESPNU beginning at 7 p.m. ET.
