Fall World Series
The Colonels played the annual Fall World Series on the newly renovated Turkey Hughes Field this year
RICHMOND, Ky. – The White Team defeated the Maroon team in the Colonels’ annual Fall World Series. The two teams split the first two games of the series; however, the White Team won the deciding game, 10-5, last Saturday at Turkey Hughes Field.

Assistant coach Todd Weaver was the manager of the White Team while assistant coach Tyler Rehmel managed the Maroon Team.

Game three saw compelling drama as Maroon Team senior Joey Stevens blasted a solo home run in the bottom of the eighth to tie the game, 5-5, and eventually force extra innings.

After a scoreless 10th inning, however, the White Team manufactured five runs in the 11th off four singles and a double to secure the series victory.

Sophomore Richie Rodriguez went 3-for-6 with two runs scored, an RBI and a stolen base to lead the White Team in game three. Junior Jayson Langfels and sophomore Jacob Daniel both provided home runs in the winning effort.

For the Maroon Team, senior Anthony Ottrando batted 3-for-6 with a run scored and an RBI while Stevens and freshman Matt Phipps both provided solo shots.

Sophomore Matt Harris earned the win in game three, pitching the final 3.3 innings for the White Team.

The Maroon Team won game two, 5-3, on Saturday, Nov. 14.

In that game, freshmen Phipps and Austin Grisham led the way as Phipps hit another home run, scored two runs and stole two bases while Grisham hit a two-run shot and then laced a game-winning two-run single in the final inning of the game.

Freshman Kyle England paced the White Team in game two, going 2-for-3 with a run scored and two stolen bases.

Freshman Cody Alvey started for the Maroon Team in game two and allowed only two runs in 3.2 innings of work; however, junior Ryne Purcell picked up the win as he pitched the final 3.1 innings of the game.

Sophomore Greg Terry received the loss, going 4.1 innings and surrendering the final two runs of the game on Grisham’s single.

The White Team won game one of the series, 12-4, on Friday, Nov. 13

A solo home run by England sparked a four-run fourth inning for the White Team that effectively put the Maroon Team out of contention.

England finished the game 3-for-5 with two RBI and two runs scored. His teammate, sophomore Jeff Emerich, batted 2-for-3 with two doubles and three runs scored.

Freshman Michael Garcia led the Maroon Team, going 4-for-4 with a home run and two runs scored.

Harris picked up the win in game one, pitching the final five innings in relief of starter Paul Duncan.

Junior Stephen Hefler received the loss, going 2.2 innings and surrendering the four runs in the fourth that put the White Team up for good.

The baseball Colonels open the regular season on Feb. 26 at Western Carolina.
