RICHMOND, Ky. – On a toasty Wednesday afternoon at Roy Kidd Stadium, the Eastern Kentucky University football team held its third and final preseason scrimmage. The team followed a script of 103 plays that pitted the starting offense and defense versus the ‘futures’ squad.

Below are some news and notes from the third scrimmage:

--Newcomer Uriah Grant tallied a sack on the first drive of the afternoon for the defense.

--Starting quarterback Cody Watts found junior wide out Shannon Davis behind the futures defense for a big play on the offense’s second possession.

--Junior transfer Marcus Williams recorded an interception in the red zone for the defense, but fumbled the ball around the 50-yard line on the return.

--Redshirt freshman Orlandus Harris made a quality catch along the near sideline from quarterback T.J. Pryor which netted the offense about 40 yards.

--Junior kicker Logan O'Connor easily booted a 52-yard field goal in a two-minute drill for the offense.

--Sophomore defensive back Jeremy Caldwell sliced his way to the futures’ 40-yard line on one of the kick-off returns.

--Watts hooked up with redshirt freshman Tyrone Goard for a touchdown pass late in the scrimmage.

--Quoting head coach Dean Hood: “I think we have a lot of talent on the team, but we are awfully young at some key positions. Physically, we’re in great shape heading into game week. However, we still have a long way to go with our mental toughness.”

Eastern Kentucky will be in search of its 32nd consecutive winning season and third straight Ohio Valley Conference title in 2009. Last year, the Colonels advanced to the NCAA Division I FCS playoffs for a record 19th time.

Eastern opens its schedule next Thursday night, Sept. 3 at Indiana. The game will be televised by the Big Ten Network beginning at 8 p.m.
