OMAHA, Neb.
– Eastern Kentucky University junior third baseman Jayson Langfels has been named a preseason third-team All-American by the college baseball website, Ping!Baseball.com. Langfels won the OVC batting title in 2009 with a .441 average and also led the country in run production at 1.67 RBI per game.

Langfels was voted first team All-OVC by league coaches and SIDs at the conclusion of the 2009 season. He was one of only two sophomores on the first team.

The Lexington, Ky. native was also named a second team All-American by CollegeBaseballInsider.com and an honorable mention All-Ping! performer by Ping!Baseball.com last spring.

A Louisville Slugger Freshman All-American in 2008, Langfels exploded as one of the top hitters in the OVC in 2009. His .441 batting average was one of the best in modern EKU history and his 72 RBI ranks third on the all-time EKU single-season list.

He was also second in the OVC in triples (6), total bases (136) and slugging percentage (.800).

Langfels blasted a team-best 12 home runs in 2009 and displayed a propensity for delivering in the clutch as two of his home runs were walk-off jobs and one of them came at home against in-state rival Western Kentucky on March 18.

After ranking second in the country with eight triples in 2008, Langfels was named a Freshman All-American and was the only 2008 OVC All-Freshman team member to make the jump to first team All-OVC in 2009. His six triples in 2009 allowed him to break the career EKU record for triples as only a sophomore.

Langfels joins Morehead State shortstop Drew Lee (second team), Jacksonville State outfielder Todd Cunningham (third team), Eastern Illinois utility player Richie Derbak (third team) and Tennessee Tech utility player A.J. Kirby-Jones (third team) as OVC representatives on the All-American team.

Other in-state players on the team include Western Kentucky catcher Matt Rice (third team), Kentucky second baseman Chris Bisson (third team) and Louisville designated hitter Phil Wunderlich (second team).

Langfels and the baseball Colonels begin their season on Feb. 26 when they travel to Western Carolina for a three-game series.
