KANSAS CITY, Mo. – Senior
Josh Taylor and junior
Justin Stommes were named to the 2010 National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC) Division I all-district team Tuesday. The all-district teams were selected and voted on by member coaches of the NABC.
Taylor set a new EKU record by playing in his 125th career game on Feb. 27 against Murray State. The native of Pittsburgh, Pa., became the 29th Colonel to reach 1,000 career points when he led Eastern with 20 points in the win over Winthrop on Feb. 20. This year, Taylor ranks second on the team in scoring at 13.2 points per game and third in the OVC in three-pointers made per game at 2.3.
Stommes is currently the only player in the OVC to tally at least 400 points and 100 assists in 2009-10. The 6-7 guard has reached the 20-point plateau seven times as a junior and leads the team in scoring at 14.3 points per game. Stommes, a native of Cold Spring, Minn., was named MVP of the O’Reilly Auto Parts CBE Classic (Richmond sub-regional) after hitting the game-winning three-pointer against UTSA on Nov. 25 with 9.7 seconds remaining in regulation.
Murray State’s Ivan Aska and Isacc Miles, Austin Peay’s Wesley Channels, Morehead State’s Kenneth Faried and Jacksonville State’s Trenton Marshall were named to the District 19 first team. Joining Taylor and Stommes on the second team were Tennessee Tech’s Frank Davis, Murray State’s B.J. Jenkins and Eastern Illinois’ Tyler Laser.
The 240 student-athletes, from 24 districts, are eligible for the State Farm Division I All-America teams, to be announced on Saturday, April 3, at 11 a.m. (EDT) at Bracket Town™ in the Indianapolis Convention Center in Indianapolis, Ind., during the NABC Convention and NCAA® Final Four®.
Eastern Kentucky (20-12) is back in action on Wednesday, March 17, when the Colonels host the College of Charleston in the opening round of the 2010 College Basketball Invitational.
