Defense Steps Up in First Scrimmage

The EKU defense looked to be in midseason form Saturday morning.
RICHMOND, Ky. – The Eastern Kentucky University football team concluded preseason camp Saturday morning with its first scrimmage of the season. The Colonel defense made a bold statement by forcing five turnovers.

Sophomore Brooklyn Fox, making a strong case to see significant time at safety, twice intercepted starting quarterback #T.J. Pryor#. In both cases, Pryor was attempting a deep pass down the sidelines. Fox’s first interception happened right in front of the end zone. The second interception came late in the scrimmage during a two-minute situation where the offense was looking to pick up the winning score.

The second team offense capitalized on a short field early in the scrimmage for a touchdown. Sophomore wide out Orlandus Harris kept the drive alive with a key third-down reception. Back-up quarterback Brendon Gregory then capped the drive on a seven-yard draw play.

Special teams made its presence felt on the game as well. Redshirt freshman Jordan Berry, who is looking to nail down the punting job, perfectly placed a punt inside the 10-yard line without a return. Senior #Logan O’Connor#, who will probably just handle kick-offs and field goals this fall, was solid on all of his kicks.

With fall classes starting Monday, the Colonels will begin their regular practice schedule. The football team will be back on the field Monday night at 7:45 p.m.

The Colonels will be looking to win their third OVC title in the last four years when they kick off the season Thursday, Sept. 2 at Missouri State. Contact the ticket office at 859-622-2122 for information on season tickets as low as $50.
