WAYNESVILLE, N.C. –
One day after setting a new school record, the Eastern Kentucky women’s golf team did it again today on its way to winning the 23-team Great Smokies Intercollegiate.  The Colonels shattered the single round program record of 292 set on Monday by carding a round of 284 on Tuesday.

The 36-hole total of 576 was 33 shots better than the previous school record of 609, set at the 2009 Pinehurst Challenge.  Before Monday’s round of 292, EKU’s best single round score was 299 set during the Drake Creek Invitational in September 2009.

“This is an awesome day for the EKU program,” said head coach Mike Whitson.  “To come down here and win against such a tough field is a big step forward for the program.”

Eastern Kentucky began the final round tied for third with Jacksonville University, two shots behind first place Western Carolina.  Louisiana-Monroe was in second, just one shot back.  Jacksonville fell out of contention with a final round 301.  ULM’s final round 296 wasn’t enough to stay in the top-5.  Western Carolina matched its first round score of 290, but its total of 580 was four shots behind the Colonels.

“The team came to the course today expecting to win,” Whitson said.  “The confidence they had today was unlike anything I’ve seen from this group.”

Senior Lisanne Schmidt led the Colonels’ record breaking round with a career-best three-under 69 on Tuesday.  She finished tied for fourth overall in the field of 124 golfers with a two-round total of 140, four shots under par.

Schmidt’s round of 69 tied for the lowest in program history.

“I’m really proud of Lisanne,” said Whitson.  “Her effort today was tremendous.”

Senior Katie Wiedmar’s 1-under final round 71 was a career-best.  Her two-round total of 144 (E) tied for eighth overall.

Linda Hogberg (147) and April Emerson (147) turned in identical scores of 72 on Tuesday and moved from 40th to a tie for 16th.

EKU’s 576 was even-par.  Western Carolina (580) finished four shots over.  UNC Greensboro (583) and Gardner-Webb (583) finished tied for third at 7-over.  Other participants included Belmont (17th), Western Kentucky (19th) and Tennessee Tech (20th).

EKU tied the Great Smokies Intercollegiate records for single round (284) and two-round total (576).  Western Carolina shot a 284 in 2008 and finished with a 576 in 2005. The 13th annual, 36-hole Great Smokies Intercollegiate, hosted by Western Carolina University, was being contested at the par-72, 5,932-yard Waynesville Inn Golf Resort & Spa.
