RICHMOND, Ky.
– The Eastern Kentucky University women’s basketball team showed little signs of rust in its first real action of the 2012-13 season, shooting 48 percent (11-of-23) from three-point range to cruise past visiting Georgetown College, 87-63, in an exhibition game on Friday night at McBrayer Arena.

Georgetown tied the game, 44-44, on a layup by Lizza Jonas less than three minutes into the second half; however, that was as close as the Tigers would get, as EKU responded with 13 of the game’s next 14 points to take a commanding 57-45 lead. Senior Jalisa Bryant then came off the bench and knocked down a pair of triples to help balloon the Lady Colonels’ lead to beyond 20 points with less than nine minutes to play in the game. The Tigers would not threaten the rest of the night.

Junior Marie Carpenter, a Preseason All-Ohio Valley Conference selection, led with EKU with 17 points on the night, at one point exploding for eight of the Lady Colonels’ 10 points during a key first-half run. Bryant and senior Brittany Coles chipped in with 10 points each, while senior Jade Barber grabbed a team-high 11 rebounds and senior Raechele Gray dished out a team-high seven assists.

EKU displayed great depth in the game, as all 14 of the healthy Lady Colonels saw action and 13 of the 14 Lady Colonels scored.

Jonas led Georgetown with 15 points on the night, while Andrea Howard recorded a double-double (11 points, 10 rebounds) for the Tigers.

EKU’s aggressive defense stifled Georgetown to just 29 percent (23-of-79) shooting from the field and 21 percent (4-of-19) shooting from deep.

EKU took an early double-digit lead when Bryant knocked down a single free throw to make it 16-6 with 14:13 remaining in the first half; however, Georgetown clawed back and pulled to within one, 23-22, on a three-pointer by Haley Armstrong right out of the second media timeout.

The Lady Colonels responded with a run of their own, as Carpenter scored eight of EKU’s next 10 points, the final three of which came off a triple that made it 33-24 with 6:05 on the clock. EKU maintained that lead until a bucket by Howard sent Georgetown into the locker room at halftime down by only six, 42-36.

Georgetown exploded on an 8-2 run out of halftime and tied the score, 44-44, on a layup by Jonas less than three minutes out of the break. However, EKU reeled off 13 of the game’s next 14 points and the Tigers never recovered. Freshmen played a large role in the decisive run, as Shelly Harper knocked down a pair of free throws, Miranda Maples connected on a three-pointer and Jasmine Henshaw scored four consecutive points to effectively put the game away.

EKU will play its regular season opener on Friday, Nov. 9 against Miami (Ohio) at 4:30 p.m.
