LEXINGTON, Ky. – The Eastern Kentucky University track and field team opened the indoor season at the Kentucky Invitational this weekend inside Nutter Field House.
Senior All-American
Ann Eason and newcomer
Carina Schrempf highlighted the meet for the women's team. Eason – who finished 42
nd at the NCAA Cross Country Championships in November – won the women's mile with a time of 4:54.21, edging Central Florida's Anne-Marie Blaney (4:54.68) by less than a second.
Schrempf – a freshman from Austria – won the women's 800 meters in her first collegiate race, clocking a time of 2:13.03.
Junior
Tashuana Yapchung (22
nd in the women's 60-meter dash, 7.85), junior Alena Galertova (23
rd in the women's 60-meter hurdles, 9.16), junior
Regina Straub (22
nd in the women's 400 meters, 59.44) and sophomore
Ann Tum (sixth in the women's 3,000 meters, 10:07.44) also turned in solid performances for the women's team.
On the men's side, junior
Amos Kosgey had the race of the meet, finishing second only to Kentucky's Keffri Neal in the men's mile with a time of 4:10.13. Freshman Jakob Abahamsen was not far behind in fifth with a time of 4:11.20.
Freshman
Ronald Korir (seventh in the men's 3,000 meters, 8:34.28) and senior
Dominique Norris (13
th in the men's 60-meter hurdles, 8.74) also had good showings at this weekend's meet.
Teams such as Kentucky, Louisville, Cincinnati, Marshall, Central Florida and Southern Illinois competed at Nutter Field House this weekend.
The track and field Colonels return to action next weekend at the Gladstein Invitational in Bloomington, Indiana.
