RICHMOND, Ky. – The seventh annual Jock N' Roll, organized by Eastern Kentucky University's Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC), was held at Brock Auditorium on Wednesday, Feb. 8. The all-athlete talent show featured six acts from six varsity sports teams: baseball, men's golf, women's basketball, soccer, volleyball and softball.
Jock N' Roll is EKU's event to support part of an Ohio Valley Conference initiative called Hoops for Heroes. Every member institution raises money to send a veteran of their choice to the OVC basketball tournament in Nashville in March. To raise the money there was a $2 pre-sale and $3 at the door charge for the event, donations were also accepted.
Women's basketball took home first place with "Dancing Through the Decades" and the performance was so good they were asked to do an encore. Men's golf finished second while soccer landed the third place title.
"It was very fun participating in Jock N' Roll with my teammates. It's something I will never forget," stated senior women's basketball point guard Mariah Massengill. "Especially since we won, it was the experience of a lifetime with girls who are like family."
This year's judges were student body President Collin Potter, strength and conditioning coach Jon-Michael
Davis and EKU super-fan Donna Sowder.
The audience was given the chance to vote via Twitter with the name of their favorite team and using the hashtag "#EKUJockNRoll17." Soccer took home the fan favorite award with their Napoleon Dynamite routine.
"The event was a huge success. I thought that this year was some of the best acts that we have had in a while, the teams really put a lot of effort into it and did a great job raising money," explained Athletic Academic Advisor and Life Skills Coordinator
Josh Shipp. "We got a lot of great feedback from the people in attendance."
This year Eastern reached its goal, raising $723.91. The money will send four year Marine Corps veteran Gage Colson to Nashville. Colson is currently a student at EKU in the aviation program. He aspires to be a commercial airline pilot.
