Alumni Coliseum (men's basketball, women's basketball, volleyball)
Alumni Coliseum (Paul S. McBrayer Arena) has been the home arena for Eastern Kentucky University basketball since the 1963-64 season when the team moved from the Weaver Health Building where it had a record of 225-51 in the previous 31 years.
Located on a southern slope of the EKU campus, Alumni Coliseum forms the nucleus of a thoughtfully-planned sports complex. The Coliseum is a massive physical plant and features a great triumph in architectural design with its wooden laminated cross-arched roof — the world’s largest of its kind — spanning 309 feet and providing an unobstructed view of events held in the main auditorium. A total of 616,276 board feet of lumber form the 170 beams and roof, which arches gracefully 81 feet above the floor level. The wood is southern pine finished in its natural beauty.
In addition to the main auditorium, which seats 6,500 for basketball games and 8,000 for other programs, the building contains four basketball courts in an auxiliary gymnasium on the east end, numerous athletics offices, both indoor and outdoor swimming pools, shower and locker rooms, a projection room, an athletic training room and a weight room. A hydraulic-operated stage is located at the east end of the main arena floor.
Eastern was a perfect 14-0 in McBrayer Arena in 1990-91 and nearly achieved the same feat on four other occasions, when the Colonels lost only one home game.
Before the start of the 2006-07 season, the basketball floor was redone with new Eastern athletic logos, brand new scoreboards were added above the north and south bleachers and new shot clocks were installed above the basketball rims. The arena lighting was updated prior to the start of the 2009-10 campaign.
Arlington (men's golf, women's golf)
Arlington, home of the Eastern Kentucky men’s and women’s golf teams, features a picturesque 6,638-yard, par 72 course located on the estate grounds. The multi-purpose complex, surrounding the Arlington Mansion, is designed to serve the social, recreational and academic needs of the University community.
The mansion, with its fine dining and social facilities, is the focal point of the estate and is located near the swimming pool and tennis courts. The “Mulebarn”, a renovated horse barn on the property, contains a stage area and large dance floor, and is used for a variety of events.
EKU Soccer Field (women's soccer)
Located on the Eastern By-Pass next to Patty A. Clay Hospital, the EKU soccer complex is the home of a 115x75 yard field with Bermuda grass maintained by an in-ground irrigation system. The field is equipped with World Cup draw-back goals, a state of the art scoreboard, 25-foot high nets behind the goals, a 33-foot video tower and press box to go with covered player benches to add comfort for the home and visiting teams. In addition, 15 feet off the opposite sideline is the players’ locker room which has showers, laundry facilities and a player lounge. The player lounge features a 42'' flat screen TV with Dish Network and Fox Soccer Channel, and an ice tank. The fieldhouse also features a visiting team locker room.
Gertrude Hood Field (softball)
Gertrude Hood Field has been home of the Eastern Kentucky University softball team since the program began in 1993.
Hood Field offers dugouts for both teams and a press box that overlooks the field. The team’s locker room is located conveniently near the field. Three sections of seating allow for plenty of fans to cheer on the Colonels. Batting cages are located just past the left field fence and a bullpen is located just outside the home team’s dugout. In 2008, a new state-of-the-art scoreboard was installed in center field.
Hood Field is named in the honor of Gertrude Hood, a pioneer in the physical education area for women at Eastern Kentucky University. She served EKU for 45 years (1928-72) and was instrumental in the development of women’s athletics at both the intramural and intercollegiate levels. Hood built the women’s field hockey team in 1928 and in 1948 she organized the Women’s Recreational Association on campus.
Greg Adams Indoor Tennis Center (men's tennis, women's tennis)
The home of Colonel indoor tennis matches is the 24,000-square foot Greg Adams Indoor Tennis Center. The structure features four newly resurfaced tennis courts, two on each side of a 10-foot high observation deck. Beneath the deck are brand new men's and women's locker rooms, as well as a refurbished players' lounge complete with new furniture and a plasma television.
Roy Kidd Stadium (football)
Roy Kidd Stadium, Hanger Field and the Robert B. Begley Building, the home of Colonel football since 1969, is one of the most unique, architecturally-designed academic-athletics complexes in the nation.
The stadium portion of the Begley Complex was named in honor of former head football coach Roy Kidd. The dedication took place on Sept. 8, 1990, when the Colonels defeated Central Florida, 24-12. Eastern opened the stadium in 1969 defeating Austin Peay, 29-10. Hanger Field was officially dedicated on Sept. 26, 1970 when the Colonels downed East Tennessee, 10-6. The field itself continues to bear the name Hanger Field.
The nine-story structure provides seating on its slanted roof for 16,000 football spectators while an additional 4,000 can be seated in bleachers across the field. Hanger Field underwent a transformation from natural grass to synthetic turf in the spring of 2009.
The Colonels have found Kidd Stadium to their liking during its 42-year history. Entering the 2011 season, Eastern has won 196, lost 42, and tied 1 (.822 winning percentage), and had a home undefeated streak of 36 games which began on Sept. 23, 1978, and was brought to a halt Nov. 27, 1983. EKU also ran off 27-straight wins at Hanger Field from 1985-89 and had a Roy Kidd Stadium OVC consecutive game winning streak of 22 games dating back to 1977 broken in 1984 and another 20-game OVC win streak stopped in 1990.
Tom Samuels Track (men's track, women's track)
Tom Samuels Track, dedicated in 1976 and named in honor of the former Eastern Kentucky University football and track coach, underwent a major facelift in the summer of 2008 when a new Mondo Super X rubber track was installed.
Mondo's Super X track has been the world’s top track for more than 30 years. Globally recognized as the fastest, most durable and environmentally safest track available, Mondo’s Super X track has been used in the past eight Olympic Games, and Mondo was the official supplier to the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing for athletic tracks.
The track measures 400 meters in circumference and is designed so that the 100- and 200-meter dash, and the 110-meter hurdle events may be run in either direction, if necessary. Another feature of the track is an infield which includes a 40-foot radius complete circle high jump area, a dual direction pole vault runway which is also convertible for jumps in either direction, a steeplechase facility with non-skid barriers and a water jump area which is covered with Eurotan ML surface. Also, the infield includes an all-weather javelin area. The discus and shotput circles have a concrete surface and are located in the infield of the track.
Turkey Hughes Field (baseball)
Built in the 1960s and named for legendary coach Charles “Turkey” Hughes, Turkey Hughes Field has been the site of 13 EKU OVC baseball championships. Located beside Alumni Coliseum, the field has dimensions of 330 ft. X 415 ft. X 340 ft. and features a bullpen area, hitting cages, ample bleacher space and a press box. In 2009, EKU Invested over half a million dollars on Turkey Hughes Field, adding a state-of-the-art synthetic turf infield that will allow the Colonels to practice and play games in all conditions, a hitter's eye in center field and a brick wall backstop.
Additional renovations to the field are in the future.
